The Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Bem Angwe, yesterday, appealed Nigerians to appreciate and show concern for families of military personnel who lose their lives while defending the country.
Angwe who stated this at the 4th Nigerian Military Human Rights Dialogue yesterday in Abuja, regretted the upsurge in criminal activities that has left several militarymen dead.
He said the country was going through immense security challenges raging from kidnappings to armed robbery, adding that the government was left with no choice than to deploy the military to handle such precarious security situations that ordinarily would have been the responsibility of the Police and other security agencies.
Speaking on the relationship between citizens and the military authorities, Angwe said there were reduced complaints in relation to atrocities committed by military men in the discharge of its duties.
He attributed the development to some of the successes recorded as a result of the dialogue between the commission and the military.
