Opinion

An election observer and monitoring group, the Independent Service Delivery Monitoring Group has condemned what it described unguarded statements by political actors ahead of Saturdays re-run election in  Rivers state, saying such statements has created an atmosphere of tension

The group said election is a civil duty and  not a do-or-die affair.

In a statement signed by  ISDMG Director Communications/Team Leader, Faith Nwadishi the group despite assurances from security agencies, Nigerians are alarmed at the sounds of war by agents of the two dominant parties in Rivers state.

Nwadishi expresed hope that the much needed reforms of the electoral process will include the institution of a reprimand process that deters undue and reprehensible heating up of the polity either through actions or rhetoric.

According to her the last two elections in Edo and Ondo states were adjudged peaceful and credible to the extent of planning and execution by the EMB, hence there is no reason to think that this one will be different.

She however expressed concern that the utterances of political actors have unduly heated the polity in the state.

She therefore urged all the political parties to eschew rancour and inflammatory statements capable of causing breach of the security and possible loss of lives and property.

She said, "Most disturbing however are utterances from high ranking APC officials, Governors and agents during the APC Mega rally at Port-Harcourt on Thursday, 8 November, 2016. Statements like “ If they shoot at you, take cover and shoot them back,” by Governor Ganguje of Kano state; “If they push you, push them back. If they slap you, slap them back” by The APC National Chairman reinforced the governor's stand in saying the federal government was in Rivers state in full force to unleash mayhem.

These statements are irresponsible and capable of creating chaos and escalating criminality in Rivers state.

She said further, "We implore INEC to provide leadership and exhibit total professionalism in the handling of the election and voting process in Rivers state.

"The Federal government and Security agencies must not only be nonpartisan but alive to their duties of providing security and protection of lives and property.
