House of Representatives was yesterday divided over plan by some members of the House to push for the establishment of International Trade Commission for Nigeria to coordinate global trade policies.

While some lawmakers supported the Bill initiated by Hon Uzoma Nkem-Abonta (PDP, Abia), others kicked against it with the excuse that it will be a duplication of efforts, as there are already established agencies responsible for such duty.

Those opposing the Bill also pointed out that creating the commission would amount to dabbling into responsibilities of Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) and Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), which they said were currently engaging in the development of the nation's economy through international trade.

Hon. Muhammad Sani Abdu, Alkaleri/ Kirfi federal constituency, Bauchi specifically urged his colleagues to be wary of endorsing the bill, stressing further that the existing agencies were not lacking in their responsibilities.

He said, "It's not true that there is currently no agency coordinating international trade in Nigeria. What is the role of NIPC, NEPC, NEPZA and the Ministry?

"If it's about direct foreign investment, we have specialized agencies for that. NIPC has particularly come up with what they call one stop shop, whereby when you go, you will meet Customs, Immigration and Federal Inland Revenue Service in one desk to address all your investment needs."

Hon Nnena Elendu Ukeje, PDP, Abia urged her colleagues to support the bill especially as it has to do with global trade relations.
