Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed confidence that Nigeria would soon become an agricultural business country in line with the ongoing efforts by both the government and the private sector to revive the agricultural sector.
Obasanjo who stated this while briefing journalists yesterday in Abuja after a closed door meeting on the Nigeria Zero
Hunger 2030 Strategic Review, organized by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) said there are ongoing efforts to ensure Nigeria become self sufficiency in food production and a business destination by the year 2030.
He said that the aim of the meeting was to synthesize the reports from the nine subcommittee that were set up at the inaugural meeting of the Nigeria Zero Hunger campaign by 2030 in IITA, Ibadan with a view to submitting a final report that would serve as its recommendation to government on how to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030.
Also speaking, the IITA Director General, Nteray Sagina observed that a likely challenge that may hinder the success of the programme will be the non implementation of the policies by the government.
He stressed the need for a committee that would assist in the evaluation of the policies in ensuring that they are implemented.
Sagina added that the meeting is geared towards the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals of ensuring that no Nigeria go to bed without food and locally produce all the food that can nourish Nigerian people.
On his part, the Deputy Director General IITA, Keton Dashiel gave the assurance that with the enthusiasm coming from the government and private sector, Nigeria would definitely end hunger by 2030.
