Determined to promote the economic diversification agenda of the present administration, the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has developed codes of practice for some Nigerian non-oil commodities to shore up the export of the products.
SON’s Acting Director General, Dr. Paul Angya disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday at the National Congress of the Nigerian Association of Small Scale Industrialists (NASSI) and sensitization programme of the organisation.
He said: "SON has since January this year identified about 15 priority agricultural products for which it has developed standards and codes of practice to enable our farmers and dealers in commodities produce for export."
According to the SON's boss, the move would go a long way to put an end to the rejection of some commodities from Nigeria in the international market over issues of quality, as in the recent case of the ban placed on beans.
While expressing the commitment of the Organisation in advancing the cause of small businesses, Dr. Angya said SON believed in fostering credible associations to stimulate the uptake of standards for sectoral self-regulations.
"The performances recorded by the cable industries in Nigeria as one of the best in the world stemmed from the collective responsibilities of the sector to embark on self-regulatory measures to upgrade their products to where they are today," he said.
Earlier, the President of NASSI, Engr. Ezekiel Essien said the aim of the congress was to showcase the potential of the association in the economic diversification drive, especially in the area of job creation.
