The National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Victor Ike Oye, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to take urgent steps toward repositioning the economy of the country, even as he lamented that the economy was at its worst state in history.

Speaking yesterday during an event to mark the one year anniversary of the party’s current leadership, Oye, who admitted that President Buhari has done his best within his abilities, pointed out that the economy of the country is heading for "perdition" if urgent measures are not taken to rescue the country.

He also observed that the economic indices of the country, including exchange rate, interest rate and inflation rate, are already showing negative signs, hence he urged Nigerians, irrespective of political affiliation, to join hands and contribute in their respective capacities to change the situation of the country.

While commending the successes already recorded by President Buhari in areas of recovery of funds and fight against corruption, Oye said there is urgent need to address the sufferings of the Nigerian masses to restore their confidence in the government.

Oye, who observed that all social crises facing the country was as a result of poor social justice which resulted from lopsided distribution of national wealth, however argued that restructuring Nigeria without addressing the root cause of the crisis will not solve Nigeria’s problems.

According to him, the ethnic posture which the crisis in the country is increasingly assuming points to the fact that the ethnic nationalities are at war over dominance.

"Our country is in a very precarious and perilous situation, it is only a fool that will not see the present economic condition of the people of this country. Some people attribute the present situations to the global economic recession, but I think it is much more than that, every problem is localised.

"As a nation, the problem of our nationhood has always been there. Every ethnic group in the Nigeria is fighting for dominance, and is affecting our collective will to succeed as a people. Our economy is in tatters as we speak, workers are not been paid in many states of the federation, only three states in Nigeria pay salaries, and one of them is Anambra state, controlled by the APGA", Oye said.

In a veiled reference to the restructuring of the economic base of the country, Oye said "There is no way we can develop as a nation if we continue to scratch the surface, we need to go right deep into the root of the problem and create a solution to the present economic and political quagmire that the nation has found itself.

"Naira to dollar is about N380 to N400, while a pound is about N503 to the naira, there is no way we can succeed as a nation under this present economic situation and that is why we are calling on President Mohamndu Buhari to take an urgent and drastic steps to remedy the situation", he added.
