At last, the leadership crises rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have come to rest as Sen. Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi has finally taken over the secretariat.
The taking over happened in a grand ceremony yesterday at the official secretariat complex, Wadata Plaza.
The ceremony was graced by states governors of Ebonyi state, Dave Umeha, Delta, Ifeanyi Okowa Rivers, Nyelson Wike, Ondo, Olusegun Mimiko, Akwa Ibom, Emmanuel Udom, Ekiti, Ayodele Fayose, Abia, Okezie Ikpeazu and Bayelsa, Seriake Dickson.
However, the two North-East governors were conspicuously absent at the ceremony probably in solidarity protest in support of the embattled former PDP national chairman, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff who was also absent at the two meetings held at the Ondo state governors lodge and the handing over ceremony at the PDP national secretariat.
The deputy senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu who dedicated time for the party members to a prayer session for the quick recovery of the President, Muhammadu Buhari that was away to London on medical vacation, said the country fervently needed him to steer the country’s mantle of leadership.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Ondo state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko said he was going to speak for the PDP governors as having thrown their weight behind Sen. Ahmed Makarfi to act as Chairman Caretaker committee of the party.
Mimiko, who also doubles as Chairman PDP Governors Forum stated that, "I speak on behalf of the governors, my colleagues that in one accord we are in support of Sen. Markarfi. We support him because his caretaker committee was properly constituted in accordance with the constitution of the PDP. Any other body by whatever name or pretension can only be illegal".
He said, "I also with the mandate of the governors appeal to anybody that feels in all this resolution process that he has lost out to come on board so that together we can build a strong and united PDP. But for now in accordance with our constitution the caretaker committee is the constitutionally constituted body to run the affairs of PDP", he said.
Sen. Ahmed Makarfi who received the hand-over note from the BoT and former NWC led by Prince Uche Secondus said he will restrict himself to the dictates of the mandate given to him by the party.
